Don’t Forget The Mobile Phone Shoppers!

I was searching for something the other day on my friend’s iPhone and I seriously thought that I needed a pair of glasses (and I am pretty sure I have perfect vision!). Why? Because that online store (won’t mention names) does not have a mobile optimized site! What a bummer! Took ages for me to look for a particular product and I finally gave up.

Anyway, just a shout out to all of you to remember to have your online store MOBILE OPTIMIZED. More and more people are using the smartphones to make purchases these days. More than 33.3 million U.S. consumers already engage in shopping-related activities on their mobile phones, 7%, or 2.3 million, of those consumers have made a purchase on their devices.

There is expected to be further up trend for purchases done via smartphones this holiday season. Studies (IBM Coremetrics Forecast 2011) have shown that percentage of shoppers buying from their mobile phones is expected to rise to 15% in November, compared to 4.5% in last year’s holiday season, and less than 1% in 2009. In October, 9.6% of online shoppers made purchases through their mobile devices, up from 3.4% a year earlier.

Whether they are waiting for the train or riding in a bus, there’s plenty of reasons for them to buy stuff online.  So, with more and more consumers than ever before planning to make the shift towards mobile this holiday season be sure not to ignore the mobile commerce wave! Interesting Facts about Mobile Commerce

If you’d like to know what’s been developing in the mobile commerce world, check out this short article and video which I’m citing from GetElastic.com along with the YouTube video which I found impressive :

Innovations in Mobile Commerce

Tilenius gave UK retailer Tesco as an example of innovative mobile commerce. When Tesco wanted to expand their market share in South Korea, they focused in on mobile shopping. South Korea is densely packed and has a very high penetration of smartphone users. Tesco put up billboards in subway stations with pictures of their products, accompanied by QR codes.

Time-strapped commuters scan the items they want with their phones and voila, their groceries are delivered within minutes or hours to their homes. Tesco’s virtual shops led them to take the number one position for online groceries in South Korea.

Tilenius ended her talk with this future shopping scenario: She goes into a Gap looking for some jeans. She finds a style that she likes but they don’t have it in her size. She scans the NFC tag for the style, selects her size and buys. The next day, the jeans, in her size, are delivered to her door.

It’s win-win for both retailer and shopper. And coming soon to a store near you.

Not bad for capturing the smart phone user market right? So make sure your store allows mobile phone users to have easy access to shop conveniently from you. Selling can happen ANYWHERE these days! Happy selling!
